The technical challenges involve achieving sufficient depth of draw (the ratio of depth to width) while maintaining a uniform wall thickness to prevent weak spots and ensure structural integrity during filling, sealing, and transportation. Advanced bowl making machines utilize sophisticated plug-assist designs and optimized air pressure profiles to control material distribution during the deep-draw forming process. Many incorporate a "bubble" or "billow" pre-stretching phase, where the heated sheet is gently inflated before the plug assist descends, promoting even stretching. Cooling is critical; conformal cooling channels within the molds ensure rapid and uniform heat extraction to minimize cycle time and prevent warpage. For products like yogurt or dessert bowls, machines may include in-line lid application systems.
