The PET plastic sheet extruder is central to producing clear, strong, and barrier sheets used for premium packaging. Processing PET, especially APET (amorphous) and CPET (crystalline), presents unique challenges. PET is highly hygroscopic, so the extruder must be fed by resin that has been thoroughly dried to moisture levels below 50 ppm to prevent hydrolytic degradation during melting, which causes loss of intrinsic viscosity (IV) and strength. The extruder itself features a specially designed "vented" barrel. The first section melts the resin, and then a vacuum vent in a second stage removes any residual moisture and volatiles before the melt is pumped to the die. This is crucial for maintaining IV and optical clarity. For CPET sheets used in ovenable trays, the extruder line includes a crystallization oven after the polishing stack to induce the necessary level of crystallinity for withstanding oven temperatures. Precise thermal management throughout the entire line—from the barrel zones to the calendar rolls—is essential to control the sheet's morphology, which dictates its forming behavior, final part clarity, and mechanical strength in applications like fruit clamshells, bakery containers, and pharmaceutical blisters.
