A single layer plastic sheet extruder is the most common and fundamental type, producing a sheet composed of one homogeneous polymer or a uniform blend of polymers/regrind. Its design focuses on efficiency, simplicity, and consistent output for a wide range of standard applications. The system comprises a single extruder (typically with a 30:1 to 36:1 L/D ratio screw), a flat die, and a three-roll calendar stack. The key performance metrics are output rate (kg/hour), thickness control (typically ±3-5% across the web), and stability of the melt temperature. These extruders are highly versatile and can process most commodity thermoplastics like PS, PP, HIPS, and PVC by changing the screw profile and barrel temperature settings. They are the backbone of the packaging industry, producing sheet for products where a single material meets all requirements: cost, stiffness, clarity, or food contact compliance. Modern single-layer extruders are equipped with automatic gauge control systems using beta or infrared thickness gauges that provide feedback to automatic die bolts, ensuring the sheet profile remains within tight specification. Their relative simplicity also makes them more energy-efficient and easier to maintain compared to multi-layer co-extrusion systems.
