The twin-screw PET sheet extruder, typically featuring co-rotating intermeshing screws, is the preferred technology for producing the highest quality PET sheet, especially when incorporating significant levels of post-consumer recycled (PCR) PET flakes. Unlike single-screw extruders that primarily function as melt pumps, twin-screw extruders provide intensive mixing, compounding, and devolatilization. The intermeshing screws create a self-wiping action that ensures a uniform melt temperature and complete homogenization of virgin PET pellets with PCR flakes, which can vary in color, IV, and contamination levels. This is critical for achieving consistent sheet properties and optical clarity. Furthermore, the modular barrel design allows for multiple vacuum venting ports along the length of the screws. This staged devolatilization is exceptionally effective at removing moisture, acetaldehyde, and other volatiles from both the virgin resin and the PCR, preventing defects like bubbles, haze, and IV drop. While representing a higher initial investment, the twin-screw PET sheet extruder delivers superior product quality, enables higher usage of PCR content (up to 100% in some applications), and provides greater process stability, making it essential for brands demanding premium, sustainable packaging.
