A Sheet Extrusion Line is the critical first step in the in-line thermoforming process, responsible for producing the plastic sheet with the exact properties required for successful forming. The line consists of several meticulously synchronized components. It starts with resin handling: drying hoppers for hygroscopic materials like PET, and precision blenders that mix virgin pellets, regrind, and additives. The extruder itself, whether single-screw for simplicity or twin-screw for superior mixing and devolatilization, melts and homogenizes the polymer. The molten plastic is then filtered to remove contaminants and pumped through a precisely machined flat die. The die lip opening is automatically adjusted by thermal bolts or mechanical actuators based on real-time feedback from a non-contact thickness gauge (often an infrared or beta-ray scanner) that traverses the sheet. The nascent sheet then enters the calender, a stack of three highly polished, temperature-controlled rolls that cool the sheet, set its thickness, and impart its surface finish (glossy, matte, or textured). Finally, the sheet is edge-trimmed, and a tension-controlled winder produces a uniform roll. The entire Sheet Extrusion Line operates as a single, responsive unit. Advanced lines feature closed-loop control systems where the thickness profile data directly adjusts the die lips, ensuring gauge variation across the web is less than ±2%. This consistency is non-negotiable, as it directly impacts the wall thickness distribution, mechanical performance, and cosmetic quality of the final thermoformed product.
