In molded pulp egg tray production, consistent wall thickness is crucial for strength. Modern lines now incorporate 3D laser surface scanners after the drying oven. As trays pass on a conveyor, the scanner creates a detailed topographical map of each tray cavity. Software analyzes this map to calculate wall thickness distribution and detect thin spots or weak areas that could lead to breakage. Trays that fall outside thickness tolerances are automatically rejected. Furthermore, the thickness data is fed back to the forming station's vacuum control system. If a trend toward thin walls in a specific area is detected, the system can automatically adjust the vacuum profile or pulp density in that zone of the mold for subsequent trays, creating a closed-loop quality system that continuously optimizes the strength and material usage of each tray produced.
