For high-performance PET packaging, the intrinsic viscosity (IV) of the polymer is a critical quality indicator directly related to strength. Advanced PET sheet extruders now feature in-line IV monitoring. A small side-stream of melt is continuously diverted from the main flow, solidified, and dissolved in a solvent within a compact analyzer. A viscometer measures the solution's viscosity, and the system calculates the real-time IV of the extrudate. This data is fed back to the process control system. If the IV drops (indicating thermal degradation), the system can automatically lower barrel temperatures or adjust vacuum levels in the devolatilization zone. This ensures every meter of produced sheet meets the specified mechanical strength (e.g., >0.78 dl/g for carbonated drink bottles), providing guaranteed performance for the downstream thermoformer and final packager.
