The plastic clamshell thermoforming machine is optimized for manufacturing the ubiquitous hinged containers used for salads, fruits, baked goods, and takeaway meals. The process involves forming two halves of a container (base and lid) from a single sheet, connected by a "living hinge"—a thin, unscored section of material that remains flexible. The technical challenge lies in forming the deep base and the shallower lid simultaneously while leaving the hinge area properly formed but not over-thinned. Machines designed for this product use precise mold tooling where the hinge area is often cooled differently to maintain its properties. After forming, a cutting die trims the perimeter and cuts through most of the hinge, leaving the small connecting section. These are often produced in multi-cavity molds on high-speed rotary machines. The clamshell design provides excellent product visibility and protection, making it a retail favorite. Modern machines allow for quick changeovers between different clamshell sizes and can handle a range of clear (APET) or opaque (PP, PS) materials, often incorporating in-line printing for branding or labeling directly on the forming web.
