The primary technical hurdle is achieving an optimal draw ratio (depth-to-diameter) without excessive thinning at the bottom corners. Advanced machines use a combination of techniques: a "bubble" or "billow" pre-stretch, where the heated sheet is inflated, followed by a precisely timed and shaped plug assist that pushes the material into the mold cavity. The plug's speed, stroke, and temperature are critical control variables. Cooling is equally important; water-cooled molds with conformal channels ensure the deep-drawn part sets quickly and uniformly to prevent sink marks and warpage. For microwaveable bowls, machines process CPET or high-temperature PP, requiring even tighter thermal control. Many bowl making machines include in-line stations for adding features like flange-notching for lid location or forming grip ridges on the sides. The output is a sturdy, functional container designed for both consumer convenience and efficient filling on high-speed packaging lines.
